It symbolizes health and beauty. A woman whose skin radiates will capture the room.
Achieving healthy skin is a holistic process: mind, body, and spirit.
It’s all about keeping the skin healthy from the inside and outside.
Here are a few main points to reach healthy, glowing skin.
Foods high in antioxidants will help preserve the skin and fight pre-mature aging. Green tea and berries are two examples that tend to get the most attention. Both of these are great for the skin and reducing acne. Other great foods include carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, mangos, spinach, cantaloupe, greens, kale, and tomato-vegetable juice. Numerous studies have also found that those who ate a diet containing whole foods (vegetables, fruits, eggs, yogurt, nuts, oils rich in monounsaturated fats, multigrain bread, tea and water) had less wrinkling and premature skin aging than those whose diets were rich in whole milk, red meat (particularly processed meats), butter, potatoes, and sugar. Try starting your day with healthy, antioxidant-filled foods by making a morning smoothie. One of my personal favorites is a spinach, blueberry and almond milk smoothie. It's quick, easy, and doesn't require a host of random ingredients.
Staying active increases circulation and the flow of nutrients to the skin. Activities like yoga and meditation help keep stress in check, which in turn reduces the release of stress hormones that worsen conditions like acne, eczema and rosacea.
The ironic thing about skin is that today's youth are often concerned about getting a sun-kissed tan. As people age, their skin priority becomes preventing wrinkles (and not tanning!). Sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging, and unfortunately, the signs of damage tend to not show up until the damage is done. That's not to say there aren't options to lessen the damage; it's just always best to protect the skin as early as possible. Broad-spectrum sunscreen is very important. Protecting against UVA and UVB rays. It's common to switch out products seasonally. For example, I've found that I need to choose different sunscreens based on the time of year. In the summer, I need a lighter sunscreen that won't clog pores in the heat. In the winter, I like a heavy sunscreen that will act as both a moisturizer and sun protection. Winter months can be drying on the skin, so I choose a thick sunscreen in the winter to add moisture.
Daily healthy habits are large factors in overall well-being and healthy skin. As great as it is to try the latest beauty trends, if the internal approach is off, it likely won't make a big difference. A few of the markers of a healthy lifestyle that will contribute to skin looking its best include:
- Staying hydrated.
Eliminate artificial juices and sodas from your diet and replace them with natural hydration. Water keeps skin healthy, aids in circulation and improves elasticity. Sipping on green tea will give you a quick dose of antioxidants. The key to gorgeous skin turns out to be a mix of science, common sense, overall good health habits, and a simple, consistent skin care regimen. Remember that a holistic approach to health brings radiant skin.
- Regular sleep
Mainly, sleep stabilizes your hydration and decreases stress hormones. In addition, sleep decreases inflammatory cells that break down collagen, allows your skin's imperfections to heal, and is tied to weight management.
- Skin care maintenance.
Overuse of products is the biggest mistake people make in their skincare regimens. We don't need a grocery bag full of the latest trends or "must have items." It's so important to know what works for your skin and stick with it. The most important products needed for beautiful skin are a simple cleanser, sunscreen, moisturizer, and a source of vitamin A (found in retinol). I've also found that using a Clarisonic or cleansing brush helps the products work better. Be sure to allow time for the products to work. Constantly switching out products can be counterproductive and a costly endeavor. Use the entire bottle or tube of product before giving up on it, and don't rush to the next trend before knowing if the current routine works for you.
